Design Tips for Choosing a Wallcovering or Wallborder

Match Your Wallcovering Pattern Size to Your Room Size

Generally speaking, choose a pattern size that matches your room size. For small rooms, select a wallcovering pattern with a small print (dainty flowers, thinner stripes, etc.). To make larger rooms more cozy choose larger wallcovering prints (bigger flowers, wider stripes, etc.). Keep in mind that wallcoverings with darker colors work better to make larger rooms feel homier.

Using smaller flowers or prints in large rooms detracts from the pattern. From across a big room, dainty flower buds will look more like polka dots. Using large wallcovering patterns in small rooms is simply overwhelming. Also, wallcoverings that incorporate lighter tones and shades help to brighten small rooms and make them seem larger.

Working With Multiple Mediums

To give your rooms added interest, use two different mediums. For example, try using a wallcovering on the bottom half of your wall while using a coordinating paint color on the upper half. Tie it all together with a wallborder.

Texturing gives flair to almost any room and can easily be used with your favorite wallcovering. Give the bottom half of your wall a textured looked by using a sponge-painted technique. Then hang your wallcovering on the top half. Again, bring the two together using your favorite wallborder.
