How To Hang Wall Paper Borders

Hanging a Wall Paper Border on a Painted Surface
- When applying a wall paper border over a painted wall, lightly sand the area where the wall border will hang before applying the border.
- Be sure the wall is smooth and free from nicks, gouges, or scratches.
- Fold the wall paper border accordion style for easy handling.
- "Butt" seams together, but do not overlap.
- Follow the ceiling or chair rail line around the room, allowing a ½-inch overlap at corners.
- To hang around a window or doorframe, overlap the horizontal and vertical strips at the corners.
- Once corners are in place, cut through both strips of the wall paper border at a 45° angle at the corner and remove excess pieces.
Hanging a Wall Paper Border on a Wall Papered Surface
- Most often, the adhesive that comes standard on the back of wall paper borders is meant for use with painted surfaces. For best results when applying over wall paper, use a "vinyl-over-vinyl" border adhesive.
- Fold the border accordion style for easy handling.
- Follow the ceiling or chair rail line around the room, allowing ½-inch overlap at corners.
- To hang around a window or doorframe, overlap the horizontal and vertical strips of the wall paper border at the corners.
- Once corners are in place, cut through both strips of the wall paper border at a 45° angle at the corner and remove excess pieces.
